Measuring pirate ships

As we had planned a trip to the Maritime museum, we spent a week learning about a few pirate ships. To get a real sense of the size of these boats, Megan and I took our children down to the field to measure them.

Each group was given either a trundle wheel or meter stick and  a worksheet with the lengths of each boat. It really was quite amazing to see how small the boats actually were.

To compare the size of a modern day ship, as a whole group we measured out the length of the MSC Splendida which was 330m long. We had to go onto Dean rd near school, and it took up the whole length of the road!
