Pigeon Valley "Frog Outing"

As our theme on books is coming to and end, we planned a fun outing to Pigeon Valley to correspond with our last book, 'The Wide Mouthed frog."

Gill and I told the parents about the outing and gave them a brief of providing a "frog lunch". Wow some parents really outdid themselves! Thank you so much!

Aarivs mom supplied us a 'fly and spider' cake. Mikhaeels mom sent him to school with a frog face and his frog lunch all packaged in a frog packet.

What was inside the packet - all clearly labeled!
Caleb had bugs and things crawling all around
his froggy lunch.
There were all sorts of bugs and things in things packed in lunch boxes. As you can see by the pictures, a fantastic effort all round.

Froggy cupcakes,complete with a
delicious juicy worm, as well as froggy
sandwiches brought by Alka.
Keshav and his moth sandwich - perfect frog food and Rhea
with all sorts of froggy goodies.

Baby frogs for Senthen to eat.
Aruna had some more frogs eggs
Jaden and his frog cake!

After the excitement of looking at each our frog lunches, we showed the grade 2's a Life Cycle of a frog PowerPoint presentation. Then our combined classes were divided into groups. Each group had to choose a name for themselves. By now the children could hardly contain themselves. So, armed with lunch and containers to catch tadpoles we set off on the bus to Pigeon Valley.

First we had our picnic lunch then each group was sent off to a different station for an activity. We rotated after 5 minutes until every group had completed each one. Mrs Sweet, read a froggy story, Shelly was at the pond where she pointed out the tadpoles and other aspects of the mini- ecosystem. Mrs Rayner did some "frog sports" like leap frog and hopping. Aarivs mom played eye-spy and I took groups on a nature walk. We had great fun, even though it was a hot and sticky day.

Ons Leer Afrikaans

We have been learning about our Family in Afrikaans this term. We had lots of fun building sentences. Some children were very clever and built their own sentences, I was most impressed.

"My Number" booklets

Proud owners of their own number booklets.
Another fun activity we did on world Book day was to create our own number books. The children were given template for a booklet that they had to fold and cut. (easy for some...not for others!)

Fortunately Mrs Sweet was with us to lend a hand. Once the booklet were made, the children filled in all the information on their number...what came before, after, 10 more, 10 less, a picture and many more ideas. The results were great and each child had lots of fun learning about their number.

International book day.

The Grade 2 children have absolutely loved our book theme this term. So we thought it appropriate to read our favourite books to the Grade 1's today as part of International Book day.

We voted to choose the two most popular books, which were....Baboons Nest and Windy Day. Both Gill and I divided our classes into two groups. Each group presented one of the books.

The grade one children were captive audiences and thoroughly enjoyed the stories. They listened very well too, because when it came to story time, the Grade 1 children could answer all the questions correctly.
Acting out the story while we read

Senthen introduces the book to everyone.

Grade 1's enjoying the story.

Senthen did a very good job of reading the story.

It was a most enjoyable time!

Stars of the week.

Since we have begun using the ClassDojo, each and every child is trying their very best at all times. I could easily have given everybody a certificate this week!

Jessica, Okuhle and Neeshal were awarded their certificates for beautifully neat homework. Aariv and Senthen are our maths whizzes! They are working like super starts and hardly ever get their sums incorrect! Well done children.

Amazing Dog Show

Llyod Bristow brought his dogs to school today. We were all so amazed at how obedient and well trained they were. He brought 6 dogs, including a four month old puppy that was learning the ropes really quickly. The one thing that he had learnt really well was where to find the supply of treats!

Lloyd covers the dogs eyes while the ball gets hidden!
Senthen had the opportunity to hide one of the dogs favourite balls. But in no time at all, it was found!

You cant hide anything from this dog!
His little poodle was so cute. Lloyd called him the bird dog, because he could sit in his shoulder just like a parrot!

Lloyd reminded us of how to care for our dogs. The most important thing to do is to spend lots of time with them, give them lots of exercise and take them to the vet if they are ill. Good advice for us all.

Waiting for instructions
The final trick... picking out the letters that spelt Goodbye. Jessica and Adrian  were helpers.
