Grandparents day

Grandparents DayToday we had some special visitors to our classroom...our grandparents! It was wonderful having them spend some precious time with their grandchildren. Well..not only was it grandparents day it has also been arbour week. So Gill and I decided to combine the two!

We showed everyone a lovely song we found on YouTube all about trees. Each grandparent and grandchild then made some leaves for a giant tree. After that they wrote an eco message on an insect or creature that benefits from trees. It was so lovely watching everyone working towards a common goal. Our picture is now proudly  displayed  on our door!

Nearly ready for our door!

Python information

Last week after reading some "Did you know" books and listening to a Power point on Pythons, we made little pouch booklets. Each child had to answer questions like...Why does a python stare, Would you like to get a hug from a python, Are pythons good swimmers and more. They wrote the answers on small pieces of cardboard that fitted into the flaps. Those who had paid attention over the week were able to give some informative answers...well done! (pictures to follow)

Shopkeepers: Neha, Rushil and Damon.

I am very pleased to see how well our shopkeepers are doing at giving change. We have practised a lot with money during class and at last we are beginning to understand how to work out change.
Neha was a very efficient shopkeeper
and needed very little help from me.

Damon really challenged himself
by making things R1.20 and 55c.
I am pleased to say he managed to
give change easily.

Rushil had some expensive items in his shop,
none the less all the items got sold and
he managed to give change accurately.

A long story: Pythons.

The next creature Pim met was a baby python. He was shocked to find out that his mother left him, as soon as he was hatched from his egg, to fend for himself.

The baby python gave Pim such a fright when he pretended to want to practice squeezing him.
Pim rushed down his hole and told his mother, as he cuddled up for a feed ...“I'm glad I'm an aardvark,” thought Pim.”I'm glad I was born.” Pim was pleased that he had a mother who loved him.

Kamira, as well Damon and Elijah, who both love snakes and already know lots of information about snakes, had the opportunity to tell us about pythons.when they did their orals.

Elijah unravelled some string to show
us how long a python could grow to.
Our student did a wonderful science lesson where the children learnt about molecules and how different substances can affect them. She used milk, food colouring and dishwashing liquid to demonstrate this.

My class really enjoyed this lesson very much. They then made snakes and used the patterns in the milk to decorate their snake skin!

Big Business: Elephants

In this chapter Pim meets a baby Elephant. He learns that Elephants live in big families and not in holes like aardvarks. They don't need to worry about lions either because they are the King of the beasts.

Jenna and Jaden told us all about Indian elephants in their orals

and Cebo and Natalie taught us some interesting facts on African Elephants.

Gill and I decided to continue with adjectives, so we paired up our classes and got them to write descriptive poems.

We tried to get them to make their poems rhyme. It was a challenge , but with a little help we got some wonderful poems.

I typed them up and each child displayed theirs on an elephant that we made using paper plates. They really look good hanging up in the classroom.

Monkey puppets

During our monkey week, Gill and I got our children to write descriptive sentences about monkeys. After discussing monkeys and building a word bank we had our classes write descriptions. We had some lovely ideas. I had so many children sick with the flu that week, they were so disappointed that they did not have a chance to do this activity and have their monkeys displayed in the classroom when they returned!
